Why the Martial Arts?
The martial arts serve as the platform upon which 5DI is built. They instill discipline and respect while allowing each individual to explore and develop in a way that fits their individual needs and beliefs. The martial arts are about balance. They provide opportunities for growth physically, mentally, and spiritually. By utilizing this approach, each program is designed with integration in mind. Leadership training doesn’t just involve communication and goal setting skills; it includes physical conditioning and stress management. Breaking the cycle of bullying goes beyond dealing with bullies and their victims. It addresses the roles of the observers and mediators, includes awareness and prevention skills, and teaches adults constructive ways to help.
When we are in crisis, we react. Our brains search for appropriate information, and if that search is unsuccessful, we simply react as best we can. The martial arts are based on providing reactions that fit the situation, and then training those reactions until they become a habit. We adapt this philosophy to our programs by providing information that is appropriate to the crisis. When a martial artist sees a punch, he or she knows how to block. Participants learn that when they are called a name, they know to breathe, using shape and tone to discourage a confrontation.
The martial arts provide us with solutions we can train and develop. 5DI provides answers that participants can understand and practice. Ideas they can implement by rehearsing with a training partner. Concepts they have heard before packaged in way that allows them to be experienced instead of just talked about. The moving metaphor of the martial arts enhances self awareness while also teaching us to pay attention to our interactions with others. It teaches us to better ourselves to the benefit of others, and take personal responsibility for our choices, regardless of the fairness of the situations we may face in life. Why the martial arts? Because it is a tradition which gives us the skills necessary for taking control of our lives, allowing us to be safer, healthier, and happier.
